Oral hygiene checklist

Oral Hygiene Checklist
By Valley Dental Care | February 3, 2020

Checking an item off a list can be a satisfying exercise in accomplishment and empowerment. One important list we all need to check off daily is our oral hygiene checklist. We all know we should brush and floss twice daily, but here are some other helpful tips and tricks for effective daily hygiene.

Keep it Clean

Brushing and flossing twice daily is a foundational daily task we all learn about from early ages on. If you have braces, invisalign, or dentures, you may need to be even more vigilant about cleaning your mouth and teeth. Don’t forget to brush your gums, tongue, cheeks, and the roof of your mouth as well. This addition to your oral hygiene checklist can help prevent bad breath, and plaque build up.

To Rinse or Not To Rinse?

When brushing your teeth, remember to spit out remaining toothpaste, but avoid rinsing with water. This can dilute and wash away the remaining fluoride from your toothpaste, rinsing off the lasting effects of one of your most important daily oral hygiene checklist items. Rinsing away that fluoride can impede its effect on your enamel. If you must rinse your mouth after brushing, an alternative could be using a fluoridated mouthwash to rinse your mouth out instead.

Eat Well

Eating healthy foods that encourage oral health can mean avoiding foods that are high in sugars and acids. Also avoiding drinks that meet the same criteria, such as energy drinks or soft drinks. Instead, prioritize drinking water daily, and eat healthy fresh foods, such as crunchy fruits and vegetables.

Protect Yourself

Protect your teeth daily. If you play sports, a mouth guard may be a wise investment that saves you from costly mouth and jaw injuries.
Or, if you find yourself grinding and clenching your teeth at night, ask your dentist about a night guard that can protect your teeth.
There are many ways you can protect your teeth and mouth from injury, or harmful wear and tear.

Regular Dental Exams

Although not a daily task, it is important to see your dentist regularly. Your dentist can help you customize your daily oral hygiene routine for your specific needs and situation.
